Having recently moved into a new place, we’ve hosted some dinner parties lately. This generally requires having a stock of reliable, crowd-pleasing yet at least reasonably affordable wine on hand. When I realized we’d gone through three bottles of this wine in the past month, I decided it had to become a wine of the week.
The Marc Brédif 2010 Vouvray ($18.80 at SAQ) may not make enough noise to distract your guests from the debate they’re having about student protests in Quebec, the free my grapes movement in Canada, or the forest boy in Germany, but it may quietly fuel the conversation, an easy-going accompaniment. Yet it’s refreshing and vibrant enough to keep your guests awake and the debate sparked well into the witching hour.
Made of Chenin Blanc, it smells very fresh and almost bubbly, like a handful of lemons and stones. On the palate, it’s clean, smooth and again very fresh. Citrus-laced and a bit creamy, it’s fruity with a hint of sweetness. It has some weight to it, a nice round texture, a good dose of acidity, and a pleasing length. The boy on wine said it reminded him of lemon sorbet, a very fitting descriptor, I think: refreshing and palate-cleansing, but with a hint of something sweeter and richer.
Bonus: the fairly reasonable alcohol level of 12.5% will ensure that your dinner party doesn’t get too out of hand and that your fancy dishes are still intact the next morning.
